EL REINO DE LOS MUERTOS: EXPERT EDITION. Traditionally inspired Playing Cards from the heart of Mexico
Among all the international festivals, the traditional Day of the Dead celebrated in Mexico is undoubtedly one of the most popular for its depth, its beauty and its color. This celebration has been the inspiration for a wide number of decks but none of them had come from the heart of its roots: Mexico … until now! thanks to EL REINO DE LOS MUERTOS: EXPERT EDITION.
Born from the passion for a well done job and looking for a change through the artistic expression, a group of young talents created Sextante Estudio almost a decade ago, in the heart of Mexico City. They have developed their experience in industrial design, graphic, illustration, multimedia and production, with great success for all types of customer profiles, from entrepreneurs to important advertising agencies. Inspired by tradition, but since innovation, they have collaborated with other companies in a good amount of creative projects in playing cards design until they jumped into crowdfunding, a few months ago, to offer their own playing cards seal.
After the success of their first deck, El Reino de los Muertos Expert Edition is a completely refurbished reissue of a limited edition released in 2017. This deck shows the vision of the artist Guzo Borboa of the most popular celebration known as The Day of the Dead in which the illustrations pay homage to the Mexican culture of all time, from La Catrina to pre-Hispanic gods.
A wise combination of folklore and modernity has been put at the service of the design of each and every corner of these cards. The court characters tell their own story in that transition between life and death that, in this festival, far from other more pessimistic traditions, is an explosion of joy and color.
The back combines traditional elements such as skulls or flowers in an elaborate symmetrical design of basic colors in black, red and white. The aces have also been made with symbols with deep cultural roots.
This is a deck in which the design has not sacrificed the cleanliness and playability of the cards and that will be enclosed in a beautiful tuck case decorated with designs that combine perfectly with the general atmosphere.
Not only players but also magicians and cardists have been taken into account with white backgrounds, gaff cards and the new Slim Line B9 Finish by Cartamundi, who will print a limited edition of 3000 decks. Furthermore, a special collector edition of only 100 units will be created in the Sextante studio itself with a beautiful laser die cut case, assembled by hand and signed and numbered by the artist.
