Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark. Three decks, one artist

If I say “Shane Tyree is an artist with a strong experience on playing card designing” you will probably have some doubts but if I say “Call of Cthulhu”, “The White Rabbit”, “Synthesis” or “The Name of the Wind” you will perfect will know what (and who) I am taking about.

Shane is the designer behind all those well-known decks. He has launched his first venture and it is obvious it will be a true success as the project has been funded in the very first day of the campaign: Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark.

I have talked to him as he is a nice guy and this is what he has told me:

I loved working on the first Call of Cthulhu deck project. However, at the time I had next to no knowledge about what went into a good deck of cards. I knew illustration, and I knew what style I was shooting for, other than that though it was trial and error. While I was happy with my work, looking back I know there were things I could do better. I wanted to go back for the 1 year anniversary to revisit the material, and bring to bear everything that I learned. I wanted to bring the community together in ways I couldn’t before, and try something truly new and fun with the Alternate Reality Game running alongside the project. The tarot cards seemed like a natural fit, an addition and compliment to the mythos everything just sort of fell into place. I hope the Kickstarter community enjoys what I am offering with the project, and that everyone can have fun seeing it come together.

For the moment, there will be three decks:

  • The Writhing Dark: The Eldrich Tarot. a classic tarot deck with 78 cards beautifully illustrated including the four suits (Swords, Wands, Cups, Pentacles) and the Major Arcana.
  • Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark Bicycle deck: an unlimited edition with art that comes from the Tarot deck and unique illustrations for Aces and Court Cards.
  • Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark Bicycle limited edition deck: a limited edition with, for the moment, a different tuck case.

Shane is a creator that truly believe on the participation of the community in the creation process so he will have into account the opinion and ideas for the final versions of every product, including an e-book with short stories. comprised entirely of submissions from the backers.

Having in mind the fast funding record, I imagine there will be much more surprises along the campaign. Keep in touch and raise your pledge in the project page.

Good luck!
