Playing Cards FRAGMENTS. The deck that reconstructs Cubism

An explosion of geometry, colour, and fragmented forms transforms every card into a contemporary work of art. Inspired by the visual language of Cubism and the breaking of traditional perspectives, this new creation turns the classic deck into a play of planes, textures, and dimensions: FRAGMENTS.

This new project by Omega Playing Cards, designed by Bivas Bhattacharjee (Old Gravity), explores Cubist aesthetics through a bold and experimental visual approach in which traditional figures are dismantled and rebuilt through geometric patterns and abstract compositions. Strongly influenced by Picasso’s work and the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, the deck offers a visual and tactile experience completely unlike that of conventional playing cards.

The tuck boxes are printed on a metallic base using a sophisticated system of glossy and matte layers that alters the perception of depth depending on the angle of the light. Deep embossing and fragmented geometric patterns transform each box into an artistic piece of its own. In addition, the interiors are fully illustrated with Cubist mosaics and metallic effects that continue the external aesthetic.

The campaign offers two main editions, each with a very distinct visual identity: Vibrant Edition and Rusted Edition.

The Vibrant Edition represents the most energetic and colourful side of the project. The tuck box features a complex composition of fragmented typography, geometric patterns, and contrasts between matte and glossy finishes that react to light to create an almost three-dimensional effect. Shades of turquoise, coral, and amber generate a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere that extends throughout the entire deck.

The Rusted Edition, on the other hand, embraces an industrial and weathered aesthetic. The electric colours disappear in favour of a palette of oxidised iron, burnt amber, and carbonised black. The result is a deck with a heavier, more mechanical personality, as if it had been built from ancient machinery and metallic structures worn down by time.

Both editions also feature Kickstarter-exclusive gilded versions, individually numbered and produced only during the campaign. The Vibrant Gilded edition incorporates spectacular holographic blue edges with a fractal effect, while the Rusted Gilded edition features holographic gold edging that reinforces its industrial character.

The court cards completely reinterpret the classic figures of the king, queen, and jack. The characters have been dismantled into geometric planes and reconstructed as Cubist psychological portraits filled with angular lines and simultaneous perspectives. Rather than pursuing idealised beauty, the illustrations explore mechanical forms and abstract structures that force the eye to reconstruct each figure.

In the Vibrant Edition, the characters stand out through strong colour contrasts and an almost electric visual energy. In the Rusted Edition, meanwhile, the figures resemble industrial relics eroded by time, built from oxidised iron and worn metallic surfaces.

The Aces transform the classic symbols of the deck into authentic Cubist architectural blueprints. Spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds dissolve into complex geometric structures and overlapping patterns that constantly play with visual perception. Depending on the distance and viewing angle, the symbols seem to appear and disappear among the fragmented forms.

The numbered cards maintain the same visual philosophy and continue the process of geometric deconstruction throughout the entire deck. Traditional indices and symbols are integrated into abstract frameworks where metallic and matte finishes constantly interact with the light. The result is especially striking in fans and cardistry movements, where the patterns create a dynamic and ever-changing sensation.

The back design features a perfectly symmetrical composition built around a central ocular motif from which fragmented rays and interwoven triangular structures emerge. Specifically designed for cardistry and visual manipulation, the pattern generates very different optical effects and reflections depending on the angle of the cards.

One of the most striking aspects of the project is the strategic use of glossy and matte finishes directly on the cards themselves. Rather than applying a uniform surface, certain areas intensely reflect light while others remain rough and subdued, creating real depth and texture across the geometric designs.

The decks will be printed by KSPCC on premium 310 gsm black-core stock with a linen finish and poker size format. With their complex geometric patterns, experimental production techniques, and strong artistic identity, FRAGMENTS stands as one of the boldest and most visually original releases of the season.

The campaign is already live on Kickstarter, with several reward tiers available that include all four versions of Fragments as well as the possibility of obtaining decks from previous campaigns.
